Grafting Workshop

Since apples do not reproduce true from seed, propagation depends on grafting the desired variety onto a reliable rootstock.   Expert hands-on instruction by the Vintage Virginia Apples staff will introduce you to the fine art of grafting.  Each participant will graft two trees from a choice of scionwood from the Vintage Virginia Apples collection to take home with them, along with a copy of our grafting handbook. Extra rootstock and scion will be available for sale after this workshop.

If you have them, feel free to bring a pair of handheld pruners and a grafting knife- please make sure they are sharp!  If you do not have these tools, there will be several available during the class to practice with or you can purchase your own when you arrive.

Successful Biological Orcharding
Successful Biological Orcharding POSTPONED to Spring 2021 Message from the Sheltons: Due to recent concerns over travel, this workshop will be postponed to next Spring. Please keep an eye on our website for a specific date in the upcoming months.

Michael Phillips, author of The Apple Grower and The Holistic Orchard, will join us on March 28th for a workshop he describes this way: "Fascinating biological connections make for a healthy orchard ecosystem. All insect pests and fruit tree disease – whether fungal or bacterial – have launching points and particular timing. Healthy trees address these challenges first and foremost from within. Growers utilizing an ongoing investment in soil nutrition and biodiversity set the stage for gentler organic sprays to grow a successful fruit crop. The challenges you face at your locale will become far more manageable as you build a holistic system that keeps trees and berry plantings healthy from the get-go."

The program will include information on organic planning through the orchard year, including site selection, system health, holistic fungi, and dealing with a host of common orchard pests. The day will consist of classroom lectures followed by hands-on time with trees, with many opportunities to ask questions of Michael.

Lunch included. Please notify us of any dietary restrictions at least two weeks prior to the event.
