LOWRY is also spelled Lowrey, and is called Dixie and Mosby's Best. There is also a Red Lowry. The Lowry of the late 18th and early 19th century may be Lowre Queen, and not the variety that is presented now and circulated as Lowry. It is found in Central Virginia and in the Valley of Virginia, with some slight variations that can be attributed to environmental, rather than varietal, differences. Dark-red on a greenish-yellow background, with stripes and flushes of variable red, the fruit is covered with medium-size, yellow, irregularly-shaped dots. At the peak of ripening, Lowry is a good dessert apple with flesh that is firm, juicy and sweet, but it quickly becomes mealy off the tree. Lowry ripens in September
